What is kratom?

Kratom, also known as Mitragyna Speciosa, is a tropical tree that is native to Southeast Asia. The leaves of the kratom tree have been used for centuries as a traditional medicine by locals to treat a variety of conditions*.

Traditionally fresh or dried kratom leaves are chewed or brewed into kratom tea, and more recently it has been sold as kratom capsules and powder. Kratom was introduced to the United States after the Vietnam War by immigrants and returning soldiers, but started gaining popularity in the mid-1990’s. According to the American Kratom Association, it is estimated that there are nearly 5 million kratom users in the United States.

What is mitragynine?

Kratom naturally contains over 30 different alkaloids, but mitragynine is the most plentiful as well as the most studied (check out scientific research about kratom as well as the 8 factor analysis) alkaloid in kratom, and is a major factor in the kratom effects people experience. The alkaloid contents and profiles can vary widely between strains, batches, and vendors as it is based on a variety of factors including the age of the plant and its geographical location.

What are the different kratom colors?

Kratom is categorized by several vein “colors” based on the product’s appearance. The most common colors are green (typically a light green powder color), red (a slightly darker green), and white (somewhere in the middle). You may also see yellow, which is made by blending colors. The natural color variation happens during the drying and processing of the leaves and many people associate different effects with the different vein colors.

Green vein kratom is considered to be more balanced, providing a mix of both energizing and relaxing effects.

White vein kratom is known for its energizing and stimulating effects.

Red vein kratom is known for its calming and relaxing effects.

It's important to note that the effects of kratom can vary based on the individual and the specific kratom strain. It's recommended to start with a low dose (you can use a kratom dose calculator to help) and work your way up to find the right amount for you. Your experience may vary, so trying out different strains and colors to see which kratom benefits are best for you is key.

Alkaloid content can also play a major role in your experience with kratom, and alkaloid contents can vary widely between different strains and different vendors. If you find a particular strain that is extremely effective for you, we recommend taking note of the alkaloid content and trying to purchase based on that for the most consistent experience. It may also be helpful to read reviews about kratom from other users and check out a kratom discussion forum.

You can contact our Customer Service to inquire about specific alkaloid contents before purchasing.

The importance of lab testing

The dangerous or controversial effects oftentimes reported about kratom come from the unfortunate fact that there are some vendors who do not ensure the safety of their kratom products.

As a natural product, kratom is susceptible to bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, coliforms, yeast, and mold.

This is why certified lab testing is so important. Responsible and reputable kratom vendors, like Affinity Leaf, have all their kratom tested before it is processed for packaging and sent to customers or stores. Our test results are available on our website.
